Une fois la dernière version de FreeCommander téléchargée et installée, lorsque vous démarrez le programme, vous devriez obtenir un écran similaire à celui ci-dessous :

Les utilisateurs amateurs du clavier (raccourcis-clavier) se rendront ensuite dans la partie Barre d'outils pour désactiver toutes les barres d'outils, tandis que d'autres souhaiteront les adapter à leurs besoins ou envies. Un autre réglage fréquent concerne le mode d'affichage des lecteurs. Vous pouvez vouloir disposer les lecteurs accessibles, soit sous forme de barre d'icônes, soit sous forme de liste déroulante (plus économique en terme d'espace). Si vous disposez de plusieurs lecteurs, souvent vides (lecteur de carte mémoire multi-format par exemple), vous pouvez décider de ne les faire apparaître qu'une fois qu'ils contiennent une carte. La majorité des utilisateurs disposant de ressources en réseau souhaitent aussi les voir comme des disques connectés, afin de les sélectionner plus facilement, comme indiqué ci-dessous :
Les différentes possiblités de réglage des couleurs sont aussi importantes pour ceux qui désirent personnaliser l'interface du programme. Une modification classique consiste en la personnalisation de la barre d'état, afin de l'harmoniser avec le reste de l'interface. Ce réglage se trouve dans la section Couleurs et police. Cette section vous permet de régler à votre convenance non seulement la police et la couleur de fond de la barre d'état, mais aussi de tout autre élément de l'interface. N'hésitez pas à explorer les autres sections de la liste du panneau à gauche de la fenêtre Préférences et procédez aux réglages selon vos besoins et envies. Une fois ceci fait, vous pourrez alors passer à l'étape suivante consistant à modifier la façon dont FreeCommander affiche les informations.
Le mode d'affichage Détails est probablement le mode le plus populaire, notamment pour les fans de Norton Commander. Basculer vers le mode d'affichage Détails se fait en seulement deux clics de souris. Sélectionnez d'abord le menu Affichage puis le sous-menu Détails, comme illustré ci-dessous. Vous remarquerez le raccourci-clavier, indiqué sur la droite de la ligne. En utilisant les raccoucis-clavier, tel que Ctrl+F2 (dans l'exemple), vous pouvez basculer rapidement vers un autre mode d'affichage, plus adapté à la nature des fichiers concernés, puis revenir au mode précédent, une fois votre tâche achevée. Prendre le temps de vous familiariser avec ces raccourcis-clavier peut vous aider à tirer le meilleur de FreeCommander et à travailler réellement bien plus rapidement et efficacement qu'auparavant (ou que quiconque...).
L'une des caractéristiques principales de FreeCommander concerne la création et l'utilisation de Colonnes personnalisées. Cette fonction vous permet d'adapter le mode d'affichage Détails pour qu'il n'affiche que les informations que vous trouvez primordiales et dans l'ordre qui vous plaît. Pour ce faire, sélectionnez le menu Extras, puis le sous-menu Préférences. Il vous est aussi possible d'utiliser le raccourci-clavier Shift+Ctrl+S, si vous préférez.
Une fois la fenêtre Préférences affichée, choisissez la section Affichage puis la sous-section Colonnes personnalisées. Pour commencer à créer votre premier profil personnalisé, cliquez sur Ajouter à la liste, comme le montre la copie d'écran ci-dessous :
Lorsque vous devez indiquer un nouveau nom de profil, créez-en un suffisamment explicite, décrivant bien la configuration d'affichage. Pour ce guide rapide, le nom Exemple a été choisi. Une fois le nom du profil validé, cliquez alors sur le bouton Définir les colonnes :
La fenêtre qui s'ouvre maintenant vous permet de définir les colonnes que vous désirez afficher. Afin de vous aider par l'exemple, une entrée par défaut intitulée Nom apparaît automatiquement à l'ouverture, avec Alignement à gauche, Largeur de 25, affichage du Nom. Laissez cette ligne en l'état dans l'immédiat et sélectionnez le bouton Ajouter à la liste pour créer de nouvelles entrées, selon vos besoins.
Pour les besoins de ce guide, quatre lignes supplémentaires ont été créées pour Extension, Taille, Date de modification et Attibuts. Les paramètres proposés par défaut ont été conservés pour la création de ces nouvelles entrées. D'autres paramètres sont possibles pour ces différentes entrées.
Après avoir créé les lignes désirées, les réglages de chacune d'elle peuvent être affinés selon vos préférences. Pour le besoin de ce guide, la largeur de l'entrée Nom est élargie à 31, celle de Extension à 2 avec un alignement à droite, l'entrée Taille à 13 avec alignement à droite, Date de modification à 22 avec un alignement à droite et Attributs à 7 avec alignement à gauche.
Cette configuration terminée, il ne vous reste plus qu'à activer cette configuration d'affichage pour chaque panneau. Une fois le panneau souhaité sélectionné, activez le menu Affichage puis dans le sous-menu Colonnes personnalisées activez le format d'affichage désiré en sélectionnant son nom, Exemple pour notre démonstration. Répétez cette manipulation pour chacun des panneaux de FreeCommander, à chaque fois que vous désirez modifier l'affichage.
Maintenant que le mode d'affichage Colonnes personnalisées est paramétré, procédons à quelques autres ajustements. Chaque titre de colonne affiché dans chaque panneau peut être cliqué avec la souris afin de déterminer, selon quel critère les fichiers/dossiers du panneau seront triés. Dans l'image ci-dessous, le tri est par défaut sur le champ Nom.
Vous pouvez cliquer sur n'importe quel titre de colonne afin de trier la liste des fichiers selon le critère de la colonne sélectionnée; vous pouvez aussi faire un clic-droit (ou alt-clic, dépend du réglage de votre souris) sur une zone en haut à droite pour chaque en-tête de colonne et obtenir alors un menu contextuel vous permettant de sélectionner le tri à appliquer (comme illustré ci-dessous).
Une fois ce menu contextuel activé, sélectionnez l'entrée Trier par puis dans le menu déroulé à droite choisissez alors le type de tri souhaité. Dans notre exemple, nous avons choisi l'entrée Extension. Plutôt que d'utiliser la souris, vous pouvez utiliser directement l'un des raccourcis-clavier indiqué à l'extrémité droite de chaque ligne.
Après avoir mis en place le tri désiré, si vous le souhaitez, vous pouvez alors cliquer sur le titre d'une colonne pour trier en ascendant/descendant, ce qui est très pratique pour les critères Taille et Date. Ainsi vous pouvez déterminer quels fichiers prennent le plus de place ou sont les plus anciens, par exemple.
Si vous devez trouver rapidement tous les fichiers avec l'extension TMP (fichiers temporaires) par exemple, dans le dossier courant, triez par Extension, selectionnez les fichiers à la souris ou au clavier puis tirer cette sélection dans la corbeille. Mais si vous êtes plutôt adepte du clavier (comme moi...) appuyez simplement sur la touche Suppr. Vous pouvez encore faire un clic-droit sur cette sélection puis sélectionner la commande Supprimer du menu contextuel, si vous préférez.
Maintenant que vous avez paramétré FreeCommander à votre convenance, il est temps de sauvegarder cette configuration pour ne pas la perdre. FreeCommander possède une fonctionnalité nommée Dispositions favorites qui vous permet de stocker différentes configuration d'affichage pour les rappeler rapidement ensuite. Pour y accéder, passez par Affichage -> Dispositions favorites -> Editer... .
Lorsque la fenêtre Editer les dispositions apparait, cliquez sur le bouton Ajouter à la liste comme illustré ci-dessous à gauche. Puis donnez un nom pour cette configuration dans la case vide. Dans notre exemple, nous indiquons Défaut comme illustré ci-dessous à droite.

Les dispositions favorites peuvent ensuite être rappellées, soit par le menu, soit par un raccourci-clavier. Pour accéder à la liste des dispositions depuis le menu, sélectionnez le menu Affichage, puis Dispositions favorites et enfin le nom de la disposition que vous désirez rappeler. Dans notre exemple présent, la ligne Défault peut être sélectionnée. Vous remarquerez pour chacune des dispositions crées qu'un raccourci-clavier lui est automatiquement assigné. Appuyez sur la combinaison Alt+1 (appuyez d'abord sur Alt, puis en maintenant cette première touche enfoncé, appuyez sur la touche 1) pour sélectionner la première disposition favorite de la liste, sur Alt+2 pour la seconde (si elle existe dans la liste) et ainsi de suite. On peut ainsi avoir un groupe de différentes dispositions d'affichage seloin ses besoins ou envies et naviguer très rapidement entre celles-ci plus rapidement au clavier qu'à la souris à travers les menus.
Les entrées des deux listes Dispositions favorites et Colonnes personnalisées peuvent être modifiées en utilisant les boutons de configuration situés dans leurs fenêtres de configuration respectives. Vous pouvez utiliser le bouton Ajouter à la liste pour créer de nouvelles entrées, cliquer deux fois de suite lentement sur le nom d'une entrée pour la Renommer, les boutons Supprimer de la liste, Monter et Descendre permettent de réorganiser la liste des entrées. Une fois que vous serez accoutumé, gérer les listes d'entrées ne vous posera pas de problèmes particuliers. Lorsque vos modèles de présentation sont créés et enregistrés, vous pouvez alors passer un peu de temps à vous préparer des combinaisons de Dispositions favorites et Colonnes personnalisées, ce qui vous permettra alors d'utiliser au mieux les possibilités offertes. Vous pourrez ainsi avoir une configuration dédiée à vos images numériques, une pour gérer tous vos fichiers musicaux et encore une autre pour tous vos documents bureautiques et encore tout ce que vous pourrez imaginer pour répondre à vos besoins. La taille et la position ne sont que deux des éléments que vous pouvez adapter à vos besoins/envies. Essayez de changer les caractéristiques des panneaux d'affichage, en affichant l'un avec l'arborescence des dossiers et l'autre sans, et basculer rapidement de l'un à l'autre par un raccourci-clavier. Cela deviendra une seconde nature pour vous... en un rien de temps. Vous ne saures plus vous en passer...8-)
